What is Basel, Basel Accords, Basel History, and Basel Members

Basel in banking refers to a set of international standards for banking regulation formulated by the Basel Committee on Bank Supervision (BCBS). Presently, BCBS, also called Basel Committee, comprises of 45 members, they all are central banks of different countries, and bank supervisors from 28 jurisdictions. The Basel Committee, time to time, publishes accords on capital adequacy. Till now, three accords have been published; these are known as Basel I, Basel II, and Basel III. The latest Basel accord is Basel III (responding to the 2007-09 financial crisis).
